The Beginner’s Guide to SEO

Abby Costello

If you have heard the term “SEO content,” you may be wondering what in the world that means. To start off, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This means optimizing your website to be the best it can be so it can easily be found on search engines such as Google. Content is the information that you publish for visitors to consume, which can come in many forms. SEO content is content that has been created to attract search engine traffic.

Here are a few things you can do to get your content up to par for SEO:

  • Keyword research: Do keyword research before you start writing content for your website. Keyword research helps you find topics that people are searching for on the internet, so the next time they search for it, your website will appear in the search results.
  • Keyword Optimization: Knowing where and how to use keywords in your content.
  • Content Organization: Make sure the content on your site is organized logically. If users can’t find what they need quickly, they won’t stay on your site for long. Having organized content will keep users on your site longer and it is good for SEO.
  • Content Promotion: Share your content on social networks and build links to your content, both internally and externally (from your site, and from other websites).

SEO Content

Your SEO content can include:

  • Articles: many newspaper/magazine-style sites publish news articles, interview, or feature pieces to catch users’ attention.
  • Product Pages: If you are a retail e-commerce site, a good product page is effective for SEO content.
  • Blog Posts: Blog posts are great for engagement as well as attracting links. They are also an easy way to regularly crank out effective SEO content. Blog posts can be used to house other types of content as well, such as the ones listed below.
  • Videos: Depending on what type of business you are, videos can be used to attract or reach an audience. They can also help you rank on the first page of results for a popular keyword. Consider creating how-to videos for your products or services. To improve your SEO even more, include a text transcript of your video.
  • Glossaries: If you are part of a specialized industry, a nice glossary can really hep you gain some search traffic. This can include medical terms, cooking terms, etc.

Now that you know what types of content to focus on, it is time to learn how to create it.

Use the Right Keywords for the Right Audience

In order to reach the right people, your content must be optimized with targeted keywords, or the terms and phrases that your audience tends to search for. In order to figure out what these terms are, you must understand who your audience is, what kind of information they need, why they need it, and which keywords they typically use to find it. In order to do this, you will need to identify the type of audience that uses your product/service, and then observe their demographics, preferences, personal habits, etc. As mentioned above, do your keyword research. Come up with topics to create content based off those keywords.

Make Sure Your Content is Readable

When a user clicks on a link to your website, each element on the page should make them want to stay. When a user stays on your site to read the information you have to offer, it signals to Google that your page is relevant to the search query. The longer a user stays on the page, the better. When designing your web pages and creating content, keep it organized, clear, and understandable.

Use High-Quality Images

Articles that include relevant, high-quality images produce 180% more engagement. If you have the ability to do so, use well-designed images that flow with your content rather than cheesy stock photos. This makes your content feel much more trustworthy and professional, and it will improve your SEO.

Do Original Research

Including factual information, fresh statistics, and research in your content will give other websites the opportunity to link back to you when they use the information you found, which means more people will click to your website. Become a credible source so visitors to your website will be confident that they can trust you and the information you put out.

It is important to update and improve your SEO content as time progresses, perhaps by optimizing for different variations of a keyword. Look back on your successes and failures to adjust your strategies. If you still need help, Red Shark Digital is just a call away.
