UX Trends for 2018

Matt Mitchell

With the end of 2017 and the start of the new year, it’s time to start looking at innovative new trends in the world of UX. User Experience is essential to building customer satisfaction, by embracing new changes and trends you could elevate your products to a new level!

Content-Centered Experiences

A top trend that should be embraced in 2018 is the practice of content-centered experiences. Having an amazing interface with tons of bells and whistles will only get your product so far. To create a successful product you have to find the right mix of both UI and UX. Having easily accessible and well-curated content are key components to appealing to your intended audience. There are multiple ways to implement this trend, including removing design clutter and having a clear visual hierarchy.

Design Clutter involves the visual clutter that would draw attention away from the main point of the content. Not only does this involve over complicated interface designs but the use of unnecessary content as well. Having too much irrelevant content that looks like heavy reading can distract the user and subtract from the overall experience.

Visual hierarchy is the order in which visuals are presented in order to make content more comprehensive. This is often done by grouping similar visual elements and organizing them into meaningful patterns. Strong visual signifiers are often used such as contrasting colors for call-to-action buttons.

Biometric Authorizations

Although Biometrics are not a new technology, they have quickly elevated to being used in everyday life. According to Apple, the average iPhone user unlocks their device 80 times per day, Touch ID accounts for 89% of that time. With the release of the iPhone X and FaceID biometrics have evolved from the use of fingerprint scanners or passcodes for authentication and mobile security. This type of technology can improve security for users and businesses by bypassing the need for a traditional login requirement.

Advanced Personalization

Personalized UX is a major trend because it can provide each user with a tailored experience often based on a users previous interactions. Implementing new practices such as geographic location are a hot tool in app development for encouraging purchasing behavior. Apps installed on devices can utilize location data to provide content which will be relevant to user’s current location. Business can then implement this tool to make services more responsive to the environments around a user. Some apps like Starbucks have already utilized this property to provide special offers for users.

Another trend in user personalization is the use of changing interfaces. No two users are the same, so we shouldn’t continue to treat them all the same. By using device sensors, you can utilize information already provided by the user to change layouts based on the user's preferences. For example, changing font size and colors due to age capabilities.

Technology is always changing and evolving to new heights, 2018 is sure to see the rise of new practices and developments.
