Website Security Measures

Mike Fenwick

Every day, around 30,000 websites will experience some sort of cyber attack. Chances are, as your site grows, so will the chance of it being attacked. It’s important to know what measures you should take to protect your site when diving into web design Greenville NC. Our agency recently started using Webflow, an online visual editor platform that allows users to design, build, and launch websites. Along with the new platform, I wanted to refresh my knowledge of web security to make sure that the websites we design and create are as safe as they can be. Here are some of the common security concerns to be aware of in 2020.

Preventing Spam

You can think of spam as the graffiti of the internet. It’s a horrible feeling creating an awesome piece of content only to have it ruined by spam comments and other sketchy links. Unfortunately, if it’s not taken care of, it’s likely the only thing a user will remember after visiting your site. Fake comments from fake users and those sketchy links can leave users unsure about the safety of your site, and it’s a quick way to diminish the trust of users who visit your site. These fake comments are common ways that hackers are able to mess with your site. Not to mention, Google crawlers hate spam and tend to negatively impact your site's SEO relevance. Using integrations like Disqus can help you moderate comments that are made on your site.

Denial of Service (DDoS) Protection

DDos attacks, in short, work by barraging a website with a large number of fake requests. The large number of requests overwhelm servers and force them to go down. This can lead to the website being taken down offline and potentially open up some security vulnerabilities. Hackers can take advantage of these vulnerabilities and inject malicious code. To protect your website from DDos attacks, you should begin by using a reputable hosting provider. An established provider is able to do controlled testing for vulnerabilities and perform network monitoring to identify potential risks.

SQL Injections

Most web server databases are managed by SQL. SQL is a domain-specific language used in programming. It's designed to manage data held in relational databases. In the instance of an SQL injection, a hacker will try and embed their own SQL code on your website. Servers aren't able to tell the difference between their own SQL code and the hacker's injection.  The hackers can use this injection to obtain sensitive data.

Webflow’s Security

Luckily, if you’re using Webflow to build your website and you choose to host with Webflow, you don't have to worry about a lot of these security concerns. Webflow uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for hosting. With AWS, you’ll have a strong layer of protection against hackers. AWS is trustworthy and able to prevent any DDoS attacks that may come its way. Whether hackers are unleashing a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) reflection attack, SYN flood, DNS query flood, or HTTP flood/cache-busting attacks, AWS has measures in place to thwart these security threats.Make sure you’re up to date with the latest security threats and measures to overcome those threats when it comes to web design Greenville NC. Keeping your information and others' information safe should be a top priority. It’s an ongoing process as hackers are constantly evolving in their techniques.
