A Jill of All Trades: Introducing Rhonna Parker

Red Shark Digital

Hi everyone! My name is Rhonna (Ron-Nuh) Parker and I am one of the new Digital Marketing interns for Red Shark Digital. I am currently a junior at East Carolina University studying communications with a focus in public relations. I grew up in a small town about an hour away from Greenville. I have loved my time in Greenville so far and can’t believe I am 2 semesters away from graduating.

Honestly, when I applied to ECU, I had no idea what I wanted to do. My interests lie in many places, including childcare, travel, music, art, cosmetology, photography—pretty much anything that involves creativity. I originally thought that I was going to study child life and counsel sick children, however soon after my first semester in college, I realized that I want to go down a different road for my career. I love children, but I have always considered myself a people-person and aspire to work in an environment where I can fulfill my passions while remaining outgoing and creative.

I remember back to my high school honors society ceremony, (I know, that was a long time ago but trust me; this will all come full-circle), when a woman spoke about how she began her career as the Director of Communications and Events at Duke Children’s Hospital. She then continued to build her career until she eventually reached her dream job as the President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Foundation for Eastern NC. To say the least, I was truly inspired. She described a career that incorporated everything I was looking for. I looked further into the communications program offered at ECU and started taking multiple classes.

I soon realized how creative I could be in my writing, web design, graphic design and more, while still being able to work in a friendly environment where I can put my interpersonal skills to use. Since then, I have been involved on campus serving as the director of communications, as well as the public relations vice president for multiple student organizations. I have also begun working as a social media and public relations specialist for a local business and couldn’t be more excited. I have gained such valuable experience in these positions and have thoroughly enjoyed these opportunities, however, I know that there is still so much to learn.

I am thrilled to work as an intern for Red Shark, and so far I have realized that I am surrounded by an enthusiastic team who have welcomed me with open arms. I have quickly learned that each person on the team brings a different aspect of creativity and strategy to the table, and I have already experienced so much in just the first week. I dream of becoming a Creative Director where I can work with other designers, artists, photographers, videographers, writers, and marketers to make our visions come to life. I have so much desire to learn and I love having the chance to be taught and inspired by these people at Red Shark Digital.

Thanks Ya’ll!
